This week, we are talking about how to have a magical artist retreat and the fact that you can do this without traveling anywhere and without spending any money. If you’ve been feeling “meh” in your studio or you just want to push yourself to try new creative practices, holding a solo retreat is a great idea.
Listen here:
So, what is an artist retreat?
An intentional, purposeful getaway to create art
You create a space, a time and a location with no distractions and only inspiration
Here are some reasons to plan an artist retreat:
You’re feeling uninspired
You haven’t spent enough time creating lately and you can feel it
You’re feeling unhappy with your current pieces or they’ve just been sitting there, untouched, collecting dust
It’s the start of a new season and you want to begin something new
Personal Transformations can happen during an artist retreat, no matter how big or small.
When you block out and devote an entire day only to creating, you get a chance to work on a project without any interruptions.
You can also batch work and complete your WIP’s that you haven’t finished yet!
You can get SO MUCH done in a day, if you really focus. So don’t spend your day watching youtube videos, or scrolling instagram.
If you want to plan your own artist retreat, follow these steps to help you get started.
Clean/organize the space the day before.
Plan out your projects in advance
Turn your phone on “Do Not Disturb”
Start the retreat with some creative movement like yoga or going for a walk
Turn on some chill music
Start with a small, fun project to “warm up”
Don’t be afraid to try something new (Katie has taught me sketching)
Use your “special” supplies that you’ve been saving and haven’t opened
Move into a bigger project
Have healthy but indulgent snacks
At the end of your session, take 5-10 minutes to journal about the experience
Making time to be creative or to practice improving your art is difficult for everyone. We’re all struggling to find the time or the motivation to grow in our creative businesses and creative passions. Each of us, however, has the exact same number of hours in our day.
If you’re finding yourself saying things like “Oh I wish I had the time to create like that artist I follow on instagram” or, “I wish I had her life,” remember that the people who you inspire you are the people who make the time to do what they’re passionate about.
That’s why a solo, at home mini creative retreat can be such an amazing opportunity. You can set aside a whole day, or a weekend, or even just an afternoon and intentionally make the time for you to grow as an artist.
